My stepson is getting married in early November in the afternoon. The groomsmen are wearing tuxedos, and the bridesmaids are wearing long eggplant colored dresses, while the bride is wearing a long ivory gown. Afterwards there will be a sit-down meal at the reception. MOB will be wearing a knee-length dress in champagne. She wants me to try to find a dress in a light shade of purple or just generally a lighter color. I look better in darker shades, plus I think pastels and lighter shades look better in the spring or summer. I would like to possibly wear a navy dress, maybe tea length or longer. I found this dress I LOVE that is a little pricey - but will be worth it if I can wear it several times.

I am invited to wedding on April 21st, June 16th, and also Labor Day weekend - all in 2012.

The dress is strapless sweetheart, chiffon, long, and bright tangerine.

All of the weddings are either black tie or black tie optional.

Is it ok to wear a bright tangerine color on Labor Day? It is too spring/summer-ish?

What season is it appropriate to wear chiffon?

All of the wedding are in Georgia so it stays pretty warm outside here well into October...

Do you think I can pull off wearing the dress to all three events (totally different circles of people) based on the time of year?

My fiance and I are getting married on September 30, 2011 (two weeks away!). It is not a first marriage for either of us. Our wedding will be held outdoors at a park shelter at 5:30 pm with only immediate family (less than 12) in attendance. It will be very informal, and will last maybe 15 minutes, tops. Right after the ceremony we will go to my parent's house for a pizza party/reception. My question is this: what should he and I wear? We have thought about nice jeans and shirts, or just casual wear (like khakis) or he said if I wear a dress, he'd like me to wear my black sleeveless cocktail length one. I have told the minister to dress casually, not in a suit. HELP!

The guys in the wedding will be wearing ties and white shirts and black slacks, and I think the bridesmaids are wearing black dresses. I don't want to look like a part of the wedding party, but want to wear a black dress...but think it could be too dressy, it is a black chiffon 2 piece with blck flower beading on both the top and skirt. I am 68 yrs also would a dressy black and white pant suit be more appropriate? HELP!

Hello TCBA,
thank you for this site!

Traveling from the South to a Wedding early September in Maine, husband is best man for his brother, is it appropriate for me to wear black, slight sleeve, vneck, gathers across waist with broch, knee length, very classic, not cocktail.

Or should it be more summery style dress? he is wearing dark gray and would like a color to compliment, black seemed to be the best choice as a dress with patterns just looks like a bad match.

Any suggestions would be appreciated?
Thank you

I am usually not at a loss for what to wear but I am stumped by a wedding invitation I recently recieved.
The invitation is from a friend of my husband and he is definitely a "society" type. He is having the wedding in September at Cape Cod at 12:00. Normally I would assume this to be formal but the invitation was not engraved and the inner and outer envelopes were printed by a COMPUTER!
Should I go with a dressier tea length cocktail or a St. John knee length skirt suit. I am open to any suggestions. Thank you so much.

I emailed the bride asking her colors (hoping that would tip me off but she said plum and silver.) Thanks for any advise!

I am recently married and my new brother in law is to be married at a waterfront resort at 5:30 pm in mid August. The invitation does not state whether this in an indoor or outdoor event. It doesn't speak to the formality of the event either. I really do not want to wear black and I understand my mother in law is wearing a long navy dress with silver embellishments. Can you make a suggestion for me? I will be the only "southern" lady in attendance and do not want to embarrass myself or my new family.

9/9/2008 - Ladies Apparel View the Answer

I am attending a late September wedding in PA. It's a church wedding at 3:30pm with the reception immediately following (5pm) at a community center. I have just below the knee dress - basically simple - cap sleeve, v-neck/back, gathered below the bust, black with some royal blue pattern weaving through. While I obviously hope my dress choice is a good one; my main question concerns hosiery - I'm going to get some "spiffy" new black closed toed shoes ... do I need hosiery? I'm 44 - and grew up in the hosiery era .. but it seems to be worn less and less (I know I wear it less). Is this a younger person phenomenon? I read somewhere that hosiery is "out" .. but I don't live in CA or FL ... and I imagine it still adds a bit of formality? Sans hosiery is certainly more comfy ... and I wouldn't do it without some tan on my otherwise white legs.

What should I wear to a late afternoon wedding in Chicago in late September? The wedding itself is at 4 PM on a Saturday at a cathedral while the reception follows at the Newberry Library, which to me indicates that it might be a bit formal. Right now I'm considering maybe a dressy cocktail dress or a simple long gown. Which is preferable for this wedding, understated black or festive (but not too festive) colors? Is it okay to wear red if it's not too sexy/revealing? Is it too bridesmaid-like to wear slightly shiny satin/satin-type fabric or chiffon? What about shoes- should I stick to strappy sandals or shoes are preferable? Is it okay to wear slides if they're a little formal? They did't say anything in the invitation about the attire, and I don't personally know anyone in the wedding party (the groom is my boyfriend's college friend). I'm 25, and the bride and groom and most of their friends are in their late 20s/early 30s. Also, I get chilly fairly easily, and I heard Chicago weather changes very quickly. I don't want to have to lug around a sweater or jacket or even a wrap, but do you think it may be necessary?

I am going to a wedding in January in northern Ohio. The ceremony starts at 5pm at a "vineyard chapel." She asked that I wear black even though I'm not in the wedding, but her bridesmaids are wearing all black. I bought a black cocktail dress that is a halter top style with open back and arms. It falls to just below the knee. The material is a light to medium weight jersey type. My husband is afraid Iit looks to summery for a winter wedding. I just bought it though in the store (dec) and just about ever other cocktail dress I saw in the store when shopping showed at least this much skin. Does this sound wrong for a later winter wedding? I did get a wrap shall I can throw over my shoulders

What do I wear to a wedding where the ceremony is at 2 pm, with a formal reception at 6 pm? Do I dress for the afternoon or the evening? I've been told that often people change into something more formal before the reception, but this is logistically impossible for me. (I don't have a car, so I'd have to carry a garment bag around with me all day.) I'd be embarrassed to be the least dressed-up person at the reception, but I'd also be embarrassed to be wearing a formal dress while I sit in a coffee shop waiting for the reception to start.

Here's my situation. I was invited to the wedding of a close friend's daughter. My 12 year old neive lives with me and the invitation included her. I knew that the colors of the wedding were brown and turquoise, so I bought a new brown outfit and bought a pretty turquoise dress for my niece. Yesterday I told my friend that I bought a dress for my neice and she replied that she hoped it wasn't turquoise, that only the bridesmaids were wearing turquoise. So, obviously she can't wear the dress I bought her, and I can't buy another one. She does have a pretty white dress, very simple, not elaborate. Everyone is telling me that because she is only 12 (and a young lokking 12) she can wear that dress but I thought no one ever ever wore white to a wedding. The only other option in a brown outfit that she has taht is very similiar to what I am wearing and I think we'll look silly, like we were trying to match, which I think will draw more attention then if she wore the white dress. What do you think?

My son is getting married in June. It's a 7:30pm outdoor wedding at a beach resort in Georgia, with the reception in a tent. The invitation reads "resort casual." I (5'3" & size 4) was told to wear a brown tea-length dress and found one that is very "Sarah Jessica Parker" with a full tulle skirt, fitted bodice, v-neck and sleeveless. It also has clear & amber crystal beading scattered throughout the skirt and on the bodice - it twinkles. The bride thinks it's too dressy, but my friends tell me that as the mother of the groom, I need to be dressier than the guests, plus, we all dress somewhat funky anyway, and wear beaded camisoles with jeans (and beaded jeans), while the bride's family is very "Talbot's." What should I do???

Hi!
I had asked what a bride would find as challenging her and you were unsure of what I meant.

I went to a wedding last year and the bride on the receiving line (who is my husband's cousin) acted bizarre.

She said she liked my dress. It was a simple black dress (although very pretty) and I wore a black shawl with it.

The bride told me I looked beautiful as well as her mother (my husband's aunt).

The bride kept saying repeatedly "Let me see" "Let me see" Let me see".
What are you wearing? She wanted me to take the shawl off and even go so far as wanting me to turn around to see my dress.
It was extremely awkward for me and I felt like I was on display. The bride embarrassed me and my husband said she did it to take the attention off of herself. Which I don't agree with.

She seemed rather ticked off that I looked so pretty. I told both the bride and her mother that they looked beautiful. When I did that they just gave me this weird glaring stare and said nothing. I felt there was quite a stir.

I do have an upcoming wedding as well

I am nervous about wearing it, but it is my outfit to wear. It is also a formal wedding so my dress is appropriate for the occassion.

I am attending a mid-November wedding in Mississippi. It is being held in the afternoon at a Southern Baptist church. It is a very conservative church. I am going as my boyfriend's date and he is an usher. My boyfriend's entire family will be at the wedding. What do I wear???? I know strapless is a no-no..but what about a halter? Should I go with a sleeved dress with panty hose? I am stumped! Thanks!

I am attending an evening December wedding in Aspen, black-tie. I am considering a strapless black velvet long gown (with a little crenoline underneath but not too poofy). Is that too dressy? I'm 27 and I'm completely willing to buy a new dress so please be honest! Would a short gown be a safer bet?

I will be attending a formal event in early December. I have bought a black satin strapless gown, floor length, with a organza sweep train. The only detail, besides the train, is a band of black beading on the top of the dress (like a trim) that glimmers when the light catches it just right. I am wondering what type of accesories I should pair with the dress. I will wear my hair down (just above shoulders)....Dark hair -medium skin. I was thinking of a single stone necklace (large stone, thin chain) with matching earings....am I on the right track?

To The Wedding Guys,

Thanks for the feedback.
It is the best thing for me to feel
confident and good on that day.
I just thought after getting the dress that it might bother the bride that I did look so nice on her day.

I must have tried on about 20 dresses before deciding on the one I got.

I would never wear a color even close to what she will be wearing (white).
I did have two people at my own wedding that did that. They wore beige. But it didn't make any difference
it just surprised me. They are in their 50's too.

I love your wedding site!
I wish I knew about it when I got married
a few years ago.

This weekend I am attending a "black tie optional" wedding. I bought a dress, but am now nervous it may be (1) too formal and (2) too much white.
I'm not related, or a close family friend, I'm going as the date of one of the groomsmen, so I'm feeling tense about being too dressy.
Also, the floor length, strapless dress I picked out is white, with big black flowers in beads. I assumed when I tried it on that it wasn't "too white" , but I'm having second thoughts.

What do you think?

I am attending my brother-in-laws wedding this coming November in PA.
I am not included in the bridal party.

The bridal party is dressing in all black and the girls will be in halter type dresses. The maid of honor is wearing a strapless dress.

My husband is the best man and my husband's sister is in the wedding along with the bride's sister-in-law being the maid of honor.

It is an afternoon wedding in a hotel.
I purchashed a brown dress with gold sequin type design in the front. It is a beautiful sexy gown.

I feel since my brother-in-laws fiance' neglected to include me that I now have the freedom to wear whatever I desire.
I do not want to blend in like the rest of the guests wearing cocktail length dresses.

MY dress cannot be returned.
It is a final sale.
The woman are quite catty in the family and have always resented me.
How will they react to me wearing a gown to the wedding?
My husband says it is fine and can't wait for me to wear it.

her of the groom (second marriage) and after a long search found a black dress I like, but my son informed us that he read some etiquette article that said black is not an appropriate color and shows "disapproval" of the union. This is the opposite of our feelings, as we are very much in favor of the bride. I planned to dress it up with baubles and a scarf to match the wedding colors. Wedding is at the end of October in Arizona. What is the correct protocol?
Also, do you know of anywhere in the Twin Cities that sells modest formal gowns, with mid-to-long sleeves, knee+ length, round or v-neck,etc for $100 or less??

Hi Guys!
I am going to an October 8TH wedding in East Hampton (NY). It is my boyfriend's sister's weddding. The invitation states "cocktail attire". I have a black satin tea length skirt and a jewel toned blouse. Is this appropriate? If not, can you make a suggestion? The wedding is at 4 pm with the reception to follow. Also, are black strappy sandals ok for this time of year, or will I need heels or pumps?

I also just had a major injury to my hand and it has to be kept somewhat bandaged. Is it too unfashionalbe to wear short gloves?

Is it appropriate to where a Kay Unger Strapless silk black with white polka dot dress with matching chiffon shawl...

Thank You!!!

Hi fellas! I am attending an east coast wedding in the middle of September. The wedding is at 3:00 in a Unitarian Universalist church and the reception is at 4:30 at an historic mansion or something. I have this great dress but don't know if it will be appropriate. It's a deep purple satin vintage dress with large dark colored flowers. It comes to the top of my knees and it's sleeveless. The invitation says "semi-formal" and I would certainly wear this dress to an evening wedding but am unsure about 3:00 in September. I have a black velvet opera jacket thingy I usually wear with it but am up in the air about what shoes I would wear. What do you think?

I work for one of the most powerful women in NYC - her daughter is getting married in early September (technically still Summer) and I've been invited as a guest. It's black tie and at 7pm. I am planning on wearing a very form-fitting black satin jacket with a bow at the waist, and a matching black skirt that falls just below the knee, hair up, with very pretty jewelry - TWO QUESTIONS: 1) is this outfit (a suit)appropriate and 2) can you suggest what to wear under the jacket - should I stick with a black camisole or bustier, or should I go for a splash of color? I don't intend to take the jacket off, because I have horrible arms and I don't want to show them. Your advice is very appreciated. Thanks Guys!!

I'm so glad you like my gown and even more glad you said closed shoes, I was debating on open toe or not! Should I get white shoes with rhinestones on them? For the necklace, should I go with a 15/16", choker? This is all too confusing for me, I'm more of sweats and tees! My son's Bar Mitzvah isn't until 4/1/06, but how do I go about sending you pictures, should I just put the link here again after the affair?

Hi and thank you for your advice. I didn't know I could link a picture here, but if you would please take a look at the gown I'll be wearing and tell me besides the single strand of something sparkly, what should I wear in terms of earrings and a bracelet. Also, should I go with a diamond pendant necklace, or something like rhinestones all around> Thanks again!

I have some confusion over black tie.
I have an invitation to a wedding that's at 11AM in a church. The reception is at 6PM in the fanciest hotel in Amsterdam. The reception card says "black tie". Now I know that we need to dress up quite flashy for the reception, but for the wedding? The tux and glittery dress doesn't seem right for a morning wedding. Should we wear something more conservative for the wedding? I plan to get in touch with my friend to make sure, but I'd like to know what you think! Thanks.

Hi,

I am going to a wedding with my boyfriend on Sept. 10th in Washington DC (hot weather). He is the Best Man and will be in a black tux. I am not in the wedding party. Here's the thing- the wedding is in a Catholic Church at 3 pm but the reception is not until 6 at a fancy Mansion downtown. I have a knee length black strapless silk dress that I would like to wear but I'm not sure black is appropriate for a summer wedding that starts at 3? but the boyfriend will be dressy and the reception is a night...so?

Also I have a Decemeber 30th evening wedding in NYC in a fancy hotel of my good friend....I only want to buy one new dress max and I want to wear something different to each...should I save the black on for that or should I get a long dress to wear to the NYC wedding?

last question - I also have to go to the rehearsal dinner for the one in DC....probably at a nice restaurant? What do you recommend?

Thanks!!!

What to wear - what to wear!!! June wedding at 4 o'clock wedding in North Carolina in a chapel with a reception at the church following the ceremony. The wedding invitation is semi-formal, but no indications about dress. My mother, who consults Emily Post before she does anything, called to ask what I was wearing to the wedding. I told her that I had a nice camel-toned pant suit with a long duster jacket and off-white lace top with camel slingbacks. She almost dropped the phone. I then told her that I had a little soft brimmed straw hat that I could throw in for good measure and she literally hung up on me. She then started emailing me links 'to suggestions for the wedding'.

So I need some help here fellas! Heaven forbid that I would embarrass darling mother at the event. So - what should I wear. I am not a Barbie doll type by any means - I guess you could say a little on the frumpy side and a little extra padding - so the little black slinky cocktail dress won't do.... Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance....my mother thanks you too!

Hi there, what a fab site. I need a little advice. I am the wife of eldest brother of the groom (38) we are attending hotel June wedding 3.30pm and reception. I am wearing classic black shift dress but have a choice of accessories and hats, Do I go for demure but stylish look of Cream hat, black Jacques Vert Jacket with Cream and beaded trim, black and cream shoes.

Or I have the choice of larger more stunning JV Pink and black hat with matching shoes, and then plain shift dress, no jacket to keep it simple.!!!

I really do not want to outshine the bride and my inclination is to go with cream but it is more mother of the bride than the pink option.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Thanks in advance for your help! I am attending a noontime Jewish wedding in NYC on June 12th, and the invitation says "black tie optional." My boyfriend is friends with the groom, and thinks that the dress I'd like to wear might "outshine" the bride (his onw opinion).

It's a strapless, floor-length satin dress. The fabric has thin (1/4) inch horizontal white and violet stripes down the dress, and it has a little violet embroidery around the bust.

Is this dress too long for a noon wedding?

Is it a problem that there are white stripes (a.k.a. don't wear white)?

What is the proper attire for a female guest at a formal wedding in a church in Cancun for a five oclock wedding?

Should the attire for a reception at Fiesta Americana be different?
6/2/2005 - Ladies Apparel View the Answer

I have been invited to a 4pm wedding with reception to follow on the third weekend of june in NYC. It's outdoors. The invitation doesn't say anything, but I am guessing Semi-formal by the look of the invitation. I have never been to a semiformal wedding outdoors in the middle of the afternoon, so I am not sure as to what constitutes semiformal for this occasion. I was intending to follow the "when in doubt, wear that black dress" rule, but I am not sure. I have 2 dresses I can choose from, and if not, I could go shopping, if I have time. Both of them are knee length. The skirts flare out a little bit. Both sleeveless. One is a spagetti strap dress which is beaded (black beads on black sheer silk)- light beading at the top, with it increasing towards the hem line of the skirt. It has a ligth silk scarf with light beading too at the edges. The other dress is a no fuss, no muss type of dress. the only distinctive feature is that one of the shoulder straps, it's several thin straps joined together as opposed to the other soulder strap that is solid and from the same material as the rest of the dress, which I think might be rayon or polyester or something light of that sort. I am not one to accessorize much. Maybe some earrings and that's it. Is any of them appropriate? and if so, which one would you recommend? Or should I go shopping, though that might not be possible given my current schedule. Thanks!!!

I am going to a wedding held inside a banquet hall at a country club in San Fran...the ceremony's at 5pm and reception to follow(it says till about 11pm). Here are some of my choices, could you please help me decide what is most appropriate.

1. Black skirt and a White top (is it a nono to wear even a little white like for the top?)
2. Black full length sleeveless velvet dress (im worried about the material)
3. Black halter dress above the knees (i'm worried it might be too short)
4. a beige ball gown and a beige/silver fitted top (im worried this may be TOO formal and something like what the bridesmaids would wear)
5. Ann Taylor cotton dress(is cotton too understated)

Some of the things I was wondering:
-material
-colour
-length

Do you have any websites w/ pictures that could help. I'm desperate!!! Please and Thanks!

If so, what length?

I am the step mother of the bride. Even though I asked about 8 months ago to be notifed, the mother has not bothered to let me know what color or length of dress she is wearing and the wedding is in 3 weeks. The color of the bridesmaids dresses are lilac and my dress is called a dark blackberry color (amethyst). It is a halter dress that I cut off at tea length so I can dance with my husband and he won't trip me per his request (he is the father of the bride). I am making a cover up sleeveless jacket to wear during the ceremony because I am not comfortable in a halter dress in my church and don't think it's appropriate. My worry is that since I have not been informed of anything at this point am I going to be tacky if she is wearing a long dress. I believe that some of the grandmothers and great grandmothers are wearing short dresses. Also, is it appropriate at the reception to take off the jacket? It was really hard to find a size one dress for someone my age - they just don't exist. HELP! I am not confident at this point.

I have a black tie wedding to attend in a couple of weeks in Norway and I am concerned about the dress I have picked out (especially the color). I have a strapless black dress with a diagonal cut at the bottom. The shortest end goes about mid-calf and the long end goes to the top of my ankle. It is a polyester/rayon material (not too dressy) and I plan to wear strappy black heals. Will this be dressy enough/too dressy?

My cousin is getting married in a few weeks in the Detroit suburbs and I'm not sure what to wear in this instance. It's a 6 pm wedding/reception for 150 at a japanese fusion restaurant located in a historic mansion.

Some background: My cousin and his fiancee are in their early 30's. He works at an ad agency and she's an upscale hair stylist. They're both pretty artsy hipster types.

I want to look appropriate but not boring. Help!

My fiance asked me last night when we are supposed to buy our wedding bands. I was very impressed that he was thinking about the wedding...but he then proceeded with the fact that he doesn't want to have/wear a band. I figured this is sort of common with men who have hands-on jobs (he's a concrete/dirt inspector). And he says he doesn't like jewelry, but he'll wear his Mason ring. Should I let this bother me? Also, how will this affect the ceremony? All the ceremonies I've been to have the part that goes - "With this ring I thee wed" or something like that. Is it OK for me to get the band in the ceremony, but not him??

I have a wedding to attend this May 2005. It is in the afternoon at 1pm at a hotel by the shore in New Jersey. The inivitation does not mention anything of a church ceremony. It just says "Please join us as we start our lives together......" The border of the invitation has an embossed shell design. I am not sure what to wear to the reception. Would a knee length black dress be appropriate or would something more colorful be better. Any suggestions on what to wear would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a confused Brit!
A friend of mine is marrying an American girl, and I've been invited over to their September wedding in Philadelphia, church ceremony at 5pm, country club reception at 6.
In all my years dressing for English afternoon weddings I've never been to a ceremony this late and wondered if I needed to wear something long, or even a proper evening dress.
What really perplexed me though is that the groom is wearing tails - if it's a long-dress type wedding wouldn't he wear a tuxedo?

Should I go with my regular English look - knee length dress or skirt with jacket and hat - or something else? I'm only 26 so would rather err on the funky side than the frumpy.

Please help!

Most of the dresses in the shops are all sleeveless and they do actually look less frumpy, than few and far between sleeved options. What's appropriate for fall outdoors or does it not matter? I'm invited to a 5:00 PM June 2005 NYC non religious Hotel wedding, no specific attire noted. If the invite is any indication of the tone of the wedding I'm baffled. The invite is espresso brown, metallic gold engraved, non traditional and so trendy that at first glance it looked like an invite to a tacky '70's themed disco! I just can't figure out if the invite is for a wedding or a funky party. The bride is 35, hoochy, inappropriately trend obsessed and is marrying my husbands business partner. (He had best have a prenup!)
I am size 10-12, 5'8" ,blue eyed, med/long length blonde who understands but is no slave to fashion and I usually only wear black. I wear long pants, no capris.
I do not wear dresses unless they are floor length (my leg is scarred from an auto accident) and detest pastels, except blush pink. Please advise, I'm open.

Hi - Very interesting site. We are planning a wedding in the New Zealand Spring and are trying to keep costs to a minimum. Basically we would be happy with both our [small] families to attend, but as the wedding will take place in church we know that old friends will also like to attend. As this is the case, we thought we would just have an afternoon tea after the ceremony, ie sandwiches and savories and of course wedding cake. We are not expecting wedding presents. How would we word our 'invitations' [mainly so we know how many people to cater for]? We just want to announce that the wedding is taking place and also to advise that there will be something to eat and drink afterwards, making it clear in not so many words that it will not be a formal dinner.

We are an older couple, second time for both of us - I am 58 [my fiance is 66] and still not sure what I should wear. I like the idea of having something really glamorous and of course appropriate for my age [ie loved Camilla's church outfit]. I am medium build and average height.

Any advice would be really welcome. We are hoping to have no more that 50-60 people attend the ceremony.

Hey guys!
I've been going crazy.....I've been invited to a black tie wedding in NY in mid May. It's a traditional Jewish ceremony at 7 pm. I found a dress I LOVE- but it's ivory. It's satin, elegant, with clean lines, stapless, with black pipping around the top, a black satin ribbon and bow below the bust and black trim at the bottom (a bit below the knee). I'm worried b/c the dress is ivory. The woman at the boutique (and other friends) have said it was ok to wear because it isn't white....are they right?

My daughter is getting married on Mackinac Island in Michigan this summer. I'm not sure I have selected the appropriate dress to wear! The event will begin at noon and end at 4:30 pm. The ceremony will take place outside. The luncheon will be served inside. The site location has a formal to semi-formal atmoshpere. The wedding will have Harpist playing during ceremony and a pianist playing during the champagne luncheon. The bride is wearing a ball gown wedding dress and the groom a tuxedo. The maid of honor and bridesmaids are wearing knee length, very stylish dresses. The groomsmen and Fathers in tuxedos. I selected a two piece strapless dress in a peach and champagne color. The top is heavily beaded and the skirt is straight line, silk floor length with two slits cut in the front up to my knees. It very elegant. My concern is that it may be to formal for an afternoon wedding? When I discussed this with a friend of mine, her feeling was anything goes! It's the island! What do you think?

I'm so glad you guys are here to help. I think I've botched things. We are getting married at 4:00 in June on a Saterday. Only because it's the best time for the majority of our families scattered across the continent with us at the center. We live in the country where the nearest average hotel is an hour away, so we desided to have the wedding and reception indoors at a local camp ground. It's were we met, and where he proposed on a bridge over a waterfall. The building itself is basic nothing fancy at all but it holds 300 people and we are only inviting 130 at the very least 60 will attend. Rectangular tables, medal chairs. There are no linen rentals available so we bought plastic. Coctail hour catered by the grocery store and an open bar. Dinner will be buffet style catered by the camp ground. Again no options. We are dressing this up as much as possible with lots of flowers, an arch to be married under, and a butterfly theme. According to some family members I've blown it by purchasing a gown with a chapel train, allot of lace, sequins and pearls. My 2 Bridesmaids dresses are floor length, even the flower girl dress is below the knees with a full skirt. It was on sale, and looked the best on me for my shape, and well, we wanted the wedding to be formal in the first place, but the options wouldn't permit it. I can't take it back now because it's already being altered. Now what do I do about the mens attire. Suit or Tux? Any ideas how I can dress up the rest of it and make the gown acceptable?

Help!! My friends are getting married in St. Barths in May. The bride is wearing a very romantic gown (formal stapless bustier with tie back and a full silk skirt that looks similar to Kevin Costner's wife's wedding dress). The bridesmaids are wearing stapless full length heavy satin poppy colored dresses. They are perplexed as to what the groom and groomsmen should wear. The best man (grooms brother) does not want to wear a tux and has suggested a Tommy Bahama styled shirt with khaki's. The groom is thinking of wearing a dark blue Versace linen suit.

The wedding will take place outside 5:15 at a beautiful beach home with a reception to follow at a restaurant in town. There will be approximately 100 guests flying in for the wedding.

They are desperate for suggestions and need to make a decision this weekend. Can you please advise.

What is your feeling about the groom wearing a white tux? Wedding is late June. It just seems to me, that wearing white is not the "norm" and my son will look out of place. Bride is wearing white. The one bridesmaid (maid of honor?) is wearing lilac.
Second question: my daughter is going to be an usher and the bride wants her to wear a long dress in the same fabric as the bridesmaid. Will this look strange because she is not processing down the aisle? The bride is thinking my daughter will be in all of the pictures with the wedding party and thinks a shorter dress for my daughter, the usher, will look out of place. Thanks for your help!

I have a gay male friend who I want to have in my wedding party. He has been one of my best friends since high school. Rather than have him as a groomsman, I would prefer and he would prefer, to be one of my bridal attendants. My question is: What should he ware? Should he dress in a tux like the groomsman or as I would prefer, have him dressed more to reflect his unique position as a bridal attendant. Would a color match shirt be okay? Could I do more? The groom and groomsman will each ware a black tux and white shirt. My future husband is okay with this idea. That's one of the reasons I love him.

My fiance has gotten the run around from Macy's Bridal about the Maggie Sottero wedding dress that she ordered from them. She placed the order well over a year ago and ws told the dress would be ready in January. Since then, the not-very-nice manager has told her that the dress woudl be ready at the end of Feb, end of March, and now she is saying end of April. Our wedding is in 6 weeks and Jen is frekaing out. I feel really bad and want to help. I emailed Maggie Sottero directly and am wating for a response. She has gotten yealled at by the manager of Macy's for calling about the dress, so I don't think calling them will help. What should I do?
Is it typical for a dress to come in so late?
Thanks for any help. It is much appreciated!

I am writing to ask you about bridal party attire. My fiancee and I are getting married in the mountains next May, 2006. We have chosen to have a 5 o'clock wedding with three bridesmaids and groomsmen on each side. Someone mentioned that given the formality of the wedding that it would be a white coat affair. Well my fiancee would not feel comfortable wearing a white coat and I would prefer he didn't also, however I think white coats look sharp. My idea was to put my fiancee in a traditional black tux, but have his groomsmen wear the James Bond look with the white coat, and then put my bridesmaids in black gowns. I thought the contrast between the white and black on opposite sides might be unique and create a neat visual at the alter. With that said, my question(s) to you is do you think that would look tacky or just simply not attractive? And also are white coats even appropriate for a 5 o'clock wedding, or is that too early? I'm not sure of the rule of etiquette with regards to this subject matter so I want to make sure I'm making the right decisions. Any help you could offer me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

But co-workers said that its not appropriate for the MOB to wear design all over. That is should be mostly a single color dresses. So I took a friend out and found a pinkish/mauve colored dress with flowers off to the left side about mid section with the celedon colored leaves. Looks nice on me too. The theme is beachy, with seashell center peices, cake, and sand/shell filled bottle favors. The bridesmaids will be wearing sage. Originally we decided on the groom and his guys wearing tan suits with ivory shirts and sage ties (looks great together). Rather than changing the tie to make the groom stand out, could he wear the same suit but in black? How about a sage tie? I'm getting married in a year, and I was wondering on what my parents should wear, so I have two questions for you.
1) My father is a retired Navy officer, and I would love to have him escort me while wearing his Navy whites. I wonder about it though, because my dress is going to be ivory and the dresses for the bridal party are a slight renaissance theme. Would it clash too much to have a Navy officer's uniform in the mix?
2) My bridesmaids are all going to be dressed in a rich plum color (my colors will be ivory and plum), and I would love to see my mother in a purple outfit as well, as she and I both love the color, and it compliments her very well. Is it alright for the MOB to wear the same color as the bridesmaids? Or should she be in a different complimentary color? All the weddings I've been to have the MOB in black.
Thank you for any suggestions you might have!

We figured midddle of July it might be a little warm so now were trying to figure out what the wedding party should wear. So far we've come up with summer dresses for the girls, all different colors ( pastel's ) and for the guy's black or beige kaki's with a white dress shirt and the ties will match the dresses. As for the groom were kind of stuck, we had discussed a black suit , black shirt, white tie. He's concerned that he would stand out too much against the groom's men. So now were stuck on what the groom should wear, can you please help....

A friend of mine (age 49) is attending a wedding in a few months. While we looked at dresses she found one that was white and said "perfect" My reply was "NO!, Proper etiquette states that *only* the bride wears white"
RE: The etiquette, was I correct or incorrect?

Thanks for the assist in settling this matter.

I'm the mother-of-the-bride. We are planning an evening formal wedding in the month of June. What would be the most appropriate style and colors for the evening event?

I am the mother of the groom and my son is getting married in mid May on a Saturday evening. The bridal party is wearing light sage and the mother of the bride is wearing blush. I found a beautiful dress in black. Can I wear black or is that considered tacky?

I am a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding and need help. All of our dresses match, which I know is normal, but the bride wants all of our shoes to be exactly the same too. Does it really matter as long as they're dyed to match the dress (red)? The dresses are tea length, so the shoes will show. The bride picked out strappy shoes, which I cannot wear because of the way God made my feet. I told her I needed to wear closed toe shoes, so she changed all the other bridesmaids from the strappy shoes to closed toe because she said I didn't need to be the only one wearing closed toe. Help!

Hello Matthew and Bruce,
I came upon this site after a tedious search, and I'm glad I did.
I am getting married in the caribbean in June of this year. It is a simple wedding with just my husband and I before a Clergy Man. I am wearing a knee-length, white brocade, mandarin collar, sleeveless dress. My husband-to-be is wearing a tan suit. My question is, what color stockings should I wear? I am a dark-skinned caribbean girl and am not sure if I should go with a coffee color stocking or is white more appropriate? Also, what style shoes
